Cam Newton, QB, Carolina Panthers
FANTASY FOOTBALL ANALYSIS
At a position which is becoming more of a dual-threat, Cam Newton is the poster child of the new NFL quarterback movement. After a very impressive rookie campaign which literally came out of no where, Newton started off very slow during his sophomore season. But thanks to his legs as well as his arm, Newton scrapped back to post numbers of over 4,600 all-purpose yards and 27 total touchdowns.
The one thing that you have to be weary about though is that if his legs don’t remain healthy, a.k.a. Robert Griffin III, a premier dual-threat quarterback all of a sudden becomes a QB2 in no-time flat.
Entering 2013 there are plenty of question marks revolving around the front office of the Carolina Panthers. Will they hold onto their nucleus of receiving threats and what will happen to their backfield? Will they become more of the power running game that they had envisioned late in 2012 or will they continue evolving into a threatening run-and-gun style offense?
Newton deserves to be considered amongst the QB1’s heading into draft day, but he is definitely no lock for continued top-5 quarterback success. For those willing to take him on as their main quarterback, ensure that you have a solid QB2 option that you can plug in at a moments notice. With the violence of the NFL game, a running quarterback is usually on borrowed time.
