Breaking News – The Oakland Raiders have released wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey in a cost cutting move. The former first round pick would had been owed $7.7 million this season.
NFL Impact – The Raiders weren’t kidding when they said that they were going to clean house of ill-based contracts. Along with Bey, Michael Huff was also released by Oakland today. In what may not be the end of their moves, one player that has been rumored to possibly be cut is their quarterback Carson Palmer. While it is not likely, it is still possible. The loss of Heyward-Bey won’t be felt too hard in the clubhouse as he really has only had one successful season in the NFL, 2011.
Fantasy Spin – Depending on where Heyward-Bey lands, this could be a big springboard for the young receiver. If he can land in a place like Detroit where he would play opposite of Calvin Johnson, the odds of his succeeding would be far greater than if he lands on a team looking to make him the primary receiving option.
Either way, until he can prove to be a solid, reliable receiving option in fantasy football, he will remain as bench filler and nothing more. The kid is quicker than lightning though, so if put in the right situation, a possible bump into the WR3 tier in deeper fantasy leagues could come to fruition. Heyward-Bey is a late round draft option.
