Bilal Powell, RB, New York Jets
FANTASY FOOTBALL ANALYSIS
In his second season out of Louisville, Bilal Powell made some significant strides. He finished the season with 437 yards rushing while averaging 4.0 YPC. He also caught 17 receptions for 140 yards. Not great numbers and one should remember that while he did have a few decent games down the stretch in 2012, he was never able to beat out starter Shonn Greene for the job.
Let me say that again. Bilal Powell was not able to overtake the amazing Shonn Greene as starter for the New York Jets.
That itself should be enough to tell you all you need to know. But there is more. So let’s get into it!
The aforementioned Shonn Greene is now in Tennessee playing backup to Chris Johnson and the Jets have signed perennial backup Mike Goodson to a three-year deal to help bolster the RB position. While Mike Goodson has had some nice numbers playing relief duty, he’s had his challenges staying healthy. So we like Powell to be the starter at least for now. Mike Goodson could take over quickly as the starter and Bilal would go back to being the change-of-pace. In general this is a backfield to stay away from if possible.
Unfortunately for our eyes and hearts, the main running back for the Jets will have value whether we, the fantasy community, like it or not. Even Shonn had his moments last season. So if you believe Powell is going to be the guy, by all means spend a pick on him. It could be a great pick, late in a draft. Just don’t reach for him. His ceiling isn’t that high and I think of his as a Shonn Greene 2.0. In fact, if I was a gambling man, which I am, I would take Goodson first and hope he stays healthy.
And with the talent for RB’s in the draft being so thin this year, we don’t see anyone coming in and playing right away either, so don’t let that be a concern.
