Breaking News – The Detroit Tigers have sent down what was expected to be their closer for 2013, Bruce Rondon, to the Toledo Mud Hens. Unrelated to this, the organization also chose to send down Luis Marte.
MLB Impact – The Tigers find themselves in a unique situation where as they are a team that has one of the highest payrolls in all of baseball, arguably the best hitter in the game with Miguel Cabrera and the best pitcher in Justin Verlander, yet they will be going into the season using a closer by committee. General manager Dave Dombrowski was banking on the youngster to keep building off of a great 2012 season and make the transition seamlessly into the majors, in hopes of filling a very important part to the team while never having pitched in the major leagues. The experiment, for now, has failed.
Fantasy Spin – Rondon’s stock, until brought back up to the majors and given the closers role, will find themselves in a closer by committee situation. Look for Joaquin Benoit, Octavio Dotel, Phil Coke, Al Alburquerque and Brayan Villarreal to all play a role and pick up some saves. Due to the committee situation, no pitcher holds any serious fantasy value heading into 2013 unless you play in a league that rewards holds. In that case, Benoit, Dotel and Coke all could be boosted up some in the rankings.
