Well after weeks of speculation, the New York Jets finally pulled the trigger and acquired the services of running back Chris Ivory from the New Orleans Saints for a fourth round pick.
The Saints have had Ivory stashed away for quite some time and had been trying to move him this off-season. The Jets were in need of running back depth after Shonn Greene signed in Tennessee. New York did acquire promising veteran, Mike Goodson and still have Bilal Powell but neither of them are sure things to start.
Ivory should move up to be the #1 RB with this news. He has the most potential to be an every down back and has proven to be a good back for at least a significant stretch of time. In 2010, he broke onto the fantasy scene carrying the ball 137 times for 716 yards and 3 touchdowns while Pierre Thomas was injured. He has played sparingly since, but does well when given a chance. He rushed for 5.4 YPC on 40 carries last season.
The question mark for Ivory is whether or not he can catch out of the backfield. He only caught 3 passes in his three years with the Saints and that could mean the competition for work in the Jets backfield will come down to Powell and Goodson battling for third-down work. Even if that is the case, and Ivory ends up being just a 1st and 2nd down guy, Greene proved that can actually be ok.
Conservatively, I would move Ivory into the RB3 category and that will be reflected when I update the RB rankings later in the week.
