The Toronto Blue Jays have placed third baseman Brett Lawrie on the 15-day disabled list because of a sprained right ankle.
Sliding haphazardly into second base Monday night, Lawrie appears to have rolled his bad ankle and could miss some extended time. While it wasn’t a guarantee that he would hit the disabled list, due to the growing weakness of a bench in Toronto, the Blue Jays figured that it would be best to have a healthy body on the bench rather than take a wait-and-see approach.
The slide, which was eerily familiar to how their star short stop Jose Reyes got hurt, hopefully won’t pile on too much to what is already becoming a lost 2013 season for Lawrie.
In 37 games this season, the 23-year-old third baseman has hit .209 in 139 at-bats while connecting for just 5 home runs. Hopefully this rest will get his confidence back in full-throttle.
