3.31 Miami Dolphins Will Davis, CB, Utah State (5-11 ¼, 186)
With the 31st pick in the third round of the NFL Draft, the Dolphins selected CB Will Davis from Utah State. The Dolphins selected back-to-back corner backs in rounds two and three. They also selected a linebacker in the first round, making it a point to help on that side of the ball during this years draft. In the offseason, Miami made waves signing some big names (Mike Wallace and Dustin Keller) to help on offense and decided to make the draft all about defense.
With the pick of Will Davis out of Utah State, the Dolphins hope he can play significant minutes right from the start. The secondary for Miami was a glaring problem in 2012 and they lost two of their best corners, Bryan McCann and Shawn Smith during the offseason. Davis will most certainly play immediately in sub/nickel packages but has a chance to start if second round rookie Jamar Taylor stumbles. Taylor is by far the better prospect, but sometimes in the NFL, all that doesn’t matter.
One knock on Davis’ game is his tendency to avoid contact during running plays. He will go after a runner but doesn’t seem to welcome the contact. If he can toughen up on his run support, it would go a long way to getting more snaps.
