Today, the New York Jets signed tight end Kellen Winslow to a one-year contract after trying out during their past minicamp. Winslow, who turns 30 soon, should assume the role as starter over Jeff Cumberland once he can prove that his health isn’t an issue. If healthy when the season begins, we can then start to think about his fantasy value. His fantasy value will depend on more than just his health, like for instance who will be throwing the ball.
If Mark Sanchez does win the job over Geno Smith, Winslow could be an ok bye-week filler. Mark likes to throw to his tight ends and Winslow is the best option they have. And in fact, if healthy, he might be the best receiving option they have till Santonio Holmes is ready.
For now though, it’s ok if you forget this transaction even occurred. In all of 2012, Winslow caught just one pass for 12 yards.
