We’ve written quite a bit about the Patriots in the past couple of weeks (along with the rest of the internet) but it has finally happened. Aaron Hernandez, who is being investigated for his possible connection to the death of an acquaintance, Odin Lloyd, has been taken into police custody this morning.
As has been reported earlier, Odin was the boyfriend of Hernandez’s girlfriend’s sister. Details of the investigation have been on lock-down the past couple of days but we know enough to be worried about Aaron in terms of his fantasy outlook. In the days after the discovery of Odin’s body, which was less than a mile from Hernandez’s home, he had his house cleaned, turned into police a broken cell phone and destroyed his home security/surveillance equipment. It’s not looking good for Aaron at this point. And if I were New England, it might be time to cut him loose. I know that’s a drastic move so early in the game, but I wouldn’t be shocked if it happened.
This will be a story that plays into the regular season for sure but don’t touch Hernandez with anything more than a 10th round pick. And if a charge of murder does officially make its way to Aaron, it would be time to dump him all together from yours and our fantasy rankings.
It’s also time to officially move Jake Ballard up a little more. He’s almost 100% and could be the starting TE for week 1.
UPDATE: Aaron Hernandez has been released by the Patriots. That was fast!
UPDATE 2: Aaron Hernandez has been charged with murder among other firearms counts.
