The Angels have signed right hander Joe Smith for 3-years and $15.75 million.

Smith will join Sean Burnett as a complementary set-up man to closer Ernesto Frieri. Smith is coming off a season where he had a 2.29 ERA in over 63 innings. He’s made 70 appearances each of the last three years and could possibly step up into a closer role should Frieri get injured or struggle. For those like me who like to employ the strong set up man theory to keep ratios down and stumble into cheap closers Smith is one to keep an eye on.
