Former Minnesota Vikings DE Jared Allen Ready To Call It Quits?

Rumors around the NFL are running rampant late Wednesday night after DE DeMarcus Ware signed a $30 million dollar deal with the Denver Broncos just hours ago. What is being said? Simply that Jared Allen is willing to call it quits if he doesn’t receive the type of money that he feels that he deserves via free agency and could simply just walk away from the game.

[pullquote]”He wants his market value, he wants his fair salary, and if he does not get it, Jared Allen is very much at peace. He is willing to simply go about his life and walk away from football. I will tell you this, Jared Allen has a ton of admiration for Barry Sanders, who walked away from football while still having his best, still able to play at a high level. He walked on his own terms, it’s something Jared Allen has always respected.”[/pullquote]

Ok, I have never been in this type of situation before, but several hours earlier Allen had Ware’s deal on the table but was kept waiting by the Broncos’ franchise as they secretly huddled up with the former Dallas Cowboys defensive end. I am sure a lot of what Allen is saying is coming out of hurt, frustration, and most likely some undeniable anger as he sat there, left as an observer as his future financial security and bankroll took a major hit; one that he likely won’t be able to recover.

While Allen sits as one of the better defensive ends that are on the open market, he is aging and his comments of being willing to part ways with the NFL should raise the eyebrows of any interested general manager who would be willing to pay the veteran top-shelf money as it appears that frustration will allow for Allen to expose himself as a player that is entering his twilight-years and now has his passion for the game trumped by monetary values. I won’t call it greed as the NFL cripples many players every year. But there is no doubt that the passion for the game has been trumped by obtaining a big stack of Ben Franklin’s.

NFL Network’s very own Ian Rapoport reports, “He wants his market value, he wants his fair salary, and if he does not get it, Jared Allen is very much at peace. He is willing to simply go about his life and walk away from football. I will tell you this, Jared Allen has a ton of admiration for Barry Sanders, who walked away from football while still having his best, still able to play at a high level. He walked on his own terms, it’s something Jared Allen has always respected.”

While it is hard for me to believe that he will just up and walk out of the game much like Sanders did, I don’t see him signing for a percentage of what he could have made either. There are several teams in the NFL that still have a ton of salary cap room available, and one of them could come calling. But then again, perhaps a team like the New England Patriots who just signed Darrelle Revis, the San Francisco 49ers or the Seattle Seahawks could come calling and grab Allen at a discounted price.
