Texas Rangers second baseman Jurickson Profar had been dealing with shoulder soreness that was presumed to be tendinitis. After experiencing some pain while turning a double play, he went for an MRI which found a tear in the teres major muscle in his right shoulder. He will avoid surgery but will miss at least 10-12 weeks.
According to the timetable that means we won’t see Profar in action until early June. Unfortunately for Texas, they don’t have many decent options to fill the void. Utility infielder Josh Wilson is probably the first choice but he’s a 33 year old journeyman who’s likely not going to be much use to fantasy owners. One name to keep an eye on is Rougned Odor. He’s much better than his last name would indicate as the 20 year old prospect is one of the best in the Rangers organization. He’s only logged 134 at-bats above Class-A ball but he is a multi-tool player as he hit .303 with 11 homers and 31 stolen bases last year in the minors.
My guess is with Profar not lost for the season, the Rangers would be very hesitant to throw the inexperienced Odor into the mix and start his arbitration clock. Wilson is probably up first but in 990 career at-bats has an underwhelming .225 average with 10 homers and 13 stolen bases. Other possibilities include Adam Rosales, Brent Lillibridge and Kensuke Tanaka. Either way they go, there’s little to no fantasy value at the second base spot in Texas until Profar returns.
