The Carolina Panthers add to their terrible receiving options by signing perennial fantasy disappointment, Ed Dickson, former TE of the Baltimore Ravens. The one-year deal is worth $730,000.
Everything about this signing screams desperation. They need receivers so bad that they have signed the likes of Jason Avant, Jerricho Cotchery and now Ed Dickson. If there is a team that gets the award for worst off-season, it has to go to the Panthers.
Dickson was poised for great things after his sophomore season in which he caught 54 REC for 548 YDS and 5 TDS. But in 2012, his supposed to be ‘breakout’ campaign, he bombed. He bombed hard and watched Dennis Pitta turn into an every week starter. Ed finished the 2012 season with a line of 21/228 and zero touchdowns. Not much was expected of him in 2013 but then Dennis Pitta went down for the season with an injury and that left the door wide open for Dickson. With that door wide open, he puts up 25/273/1 TD.
Now in Carolina, clearly behind Greg Olsen who seems to have the safe track to 15+ targets a game, he will be utilized primarily as an extra lineman. Sure, it is possible that the Panthers find a way to make him relevant in the passing game, but don’t be fooled. He isn’t worth drafting in any leagues this season.
