The Cleveland Browns came out this morning and named Brian Hoyer the week one starting Quarterback. This move comes after both Hoyer and Manziel played well below average in the teams second preseason game versus Washington. Beat writers from the Cleveland area have speculated that this move prevents Johnny Manziel from starting against a fairly difficult trio of opponents right out of the gate in the Pittsburgh Steelers, New Orleans Saints and Baltimore Ravens (Pittsburgh especially has absolutely feasted on rookie Quarterbacks in recent years). Dodging these three juggernauts sets up a scenario which could see Cleveland sitting at 0-3 heading into their bye week which would give Manziel a week to work with the first team while alleviating a significant amount of the pressure for immediate success. It is also possible that this move has little to do with the play of Hoyer and more to do with the still very prominent immaturity of the Brown polarizing rookie Quarterback. Regardless of the week one starter; rest assured it’s certainly a matter of when we see Manziel behind center this year, not if.
